Three Ingredients for an Effective eBook

Three Ingredients for an Effective eBook @ SarahWritesStoriesWe’ve talked before about how an eBook can help your business, but that success is of course tied to the quality of your eBook.  Here are three ingredients for an effective eBook.

Choose Your Topic Wisely

Just like a blog post should aim to inform, entertain and/or persuade, so should an eBook.  Think about what you want to accomplish with your eBook and who your target market is.

  • Do you want to offer in-depth advice on a topic your potential customers would like to know more about?
  • Do you want to inform your employees and business associates about the unique history of your company and how it drives your decisions today?
  • Is there an issue related to your industry about which you want to inform and persuade your target audience?

Choosing the right topic is half the battle, but focusing on informing, entertaining or persuading your customers will get you there.

Make Your Words Perfect

Another 30 percent of the battle is effectively communicating your topic.  Even if you’re the best writer on the planet, if there’s one thing you absolutely should do between writing and publishing, it’s to hire an editor.

It’s great if you have a friend or family member with sharp eyes, but if you wouldn’t recommend them to a business colleague, then you should consider hiring a professional.  No matter how good the information in your eBook is, people will find it hard to believe it’s credible if it’s riddled with typos, inconsistent stylistics and spelling/grammar issues.

Present a Polished Final Product

The last 20 percent of the battle is how your eBook actually looks.  People do judge a book by its cover, even if it’s electronic, and you’ll get a lot better reception if your eBook looks professional.

If you’re going the Kindle/Nook route, then there are specific formatting requirements you most follow in order for your book to translate properly into those outlets.

Another option is the direct-sale PDF, which you can post on your website for sale, distribute internally within your business or externally to colleagues, or deliver as an incentive or promotional item.  Direct-sale PDFs should look ready to print, but with the additional benefits of having bookmarks, clickable tables of contents, and clickable hyperlinks to external websites or email addresses.

How eBooks Can Help Your Business

Sarah Writes Stories: Three Ways an eBook Can Help Your BusinessIf you’re looking to take your business marketing to the next level, one of the very best things you can do is write an eBook.  Here are three great reasons to do so.

1) eBooks Position You as an Expert

If you’re in business for yourself, then there’s a very good chance you consider yourself an expert at what you do — and you should! Writing an eBook (or working with a ghostwriter to write one) is a fantastic way to position yourself as such.  Having an eBook tells potential customers and partners that you’re serious about what you do and that you have a passion for it beyond the ordinary.  And when your eBook is good (and it had better be!), it delivers on the promise that you’re the expert you say you are.

2) eBooks Provide an Easy Incentive

If you want customers to sign up for a newsletter or even invest in a new product or service, offering the incentive of a free eBook can be a great way to get people to make the leap when they’re on the fence.  For this to work, you’ll want to pick a topic and align it well with the target market for your new product/service/newsletter.

3) eBooks Create Passive Income

One of the nicest things about eBooks is that they continue to earn money long after the hard work of writing, editing and publishing is done.  If you do your due diligence up front by creating a helpful, polished and targeted eBook, you’ve got a good shot at a long shelf-life as long as it’s promoted and available to your customers and partners.

Get Started on your eBook ASAP

The sooner you get moving on your eBook, the sooner you can start reaping the benefits of expertise, incentive and income.  If you’re in need of a ghostwriter, a copy editor or someone to format your eBook for Kindle, Nook or direct-sale PDF, I’d love to talk to you about how we can work together to create an eBook that does wonders for your business.
